Many Christians know they violate the First Amendment by imposing their religion in government and society, still many deny their attempts to hijack America. Explaining their violations results in mental gymnastics and gaslighting as they try to convince, someone, that the obvious, separation between church and state, was not implied thru the wording, as understood by any reasonably intelligent person of the time. Present the person with the Jefferson Letter and they will point out that he didn't write the Constitution, which is ridiculous. There is a document written by James Madison, whom wrote the Bill of Rights, which includes the First Amendment, that Christians have worked hard to keep out of school curriculums, A Memorial and Remonstrance Against Establishing a Provision for Teachers of the Christian Religion.
It was written in direct opposition to the bill introduced by Patrick Henry, which aimed to force Christian "values", on everyone in Virginia. Madison expounds on the many ways in which religion can entangle itself with government, and makes it explicitly clear that should be as far apart as possible. The value of his rebuttal to Christian Nationalism can not be overstated; it leaves no room for misunderstanding the author's interpretation of the First Amendment!
